Atal Tunnel, Rohtang
A 9.02 km all-weather highway tunnel below Rohtang Pass, reducing the Manali-Leh route and improving strategic connectivity to Lahaul-Spiti and Ladakh.
Compared with the first announced target
The tunnel opened in October 2020 after earlier construction targets slipped because of high-altitude geology, water ingress and winter working constraints.
Residents of Lahaul-Spiti, travellers between Manali and Leh, defence logistics and tourism users requiring all-weather access.
Timeline
Main works advanced under Border Roads Organisation for all-weather access beyond Rohtang Pass.
The Prime Minister dedicated Atal Tunnel to the nation.
Risk notes
- Completed project; residual risks are operations, safety and winter maintenance
- High-altitude maintenance and traffic management remain important
